Man killed in Overbrook police shootout

A man was killed in an officer-involved shooting in Philadelphia late Thursday.

Officers were in the area of 56th Street and Lebanon Avenue in the Overbrook section for a report of burglaries in the neighborhood, police said.

Police said a man was fatally shot after officers encountered a suspicoius person at about 10:40 p.m.

Police and suspect then exchanged gunfire. No officers were injured in the gun battle.

"He fired at the police within a few feet from police officers," Chief Inspector Scott Small told reporters. "So the police officers were very, very lucky that they weren't struck by the suspect's gunfire."

It wasn't immediately clear what sparked the gunfire. Police wouldn't release further details, saying the incident was still under investigation. No other information about the man who was killed was available.
