A man is in critical condition after an arson fire in Frankford this morning.

Philadelphia police said the fire broke out at a home on the 1500 block of Foulkrod Street at about 6:30 a.m. The house was unoccupied when investigators arrived, but a man later showed up at Temple University Hospital with injuries from the fire, said Officer Christine O'Brien, a police spokeswoman.

The man suffered severe burns and smoke inhalation and is in critical condition, she said. O'Brien said the man's identity isn't known.

Investigators determined that the fire was intentionally set and took a person into custody, she said. That person's name was not released, and O'Brien said police are continuing to investigate the incident.

Initial reports indicated that neighbors heard gunshots around the time of the blaze, but police are still trying to confirm whether any shots were fired, O'Brien said. The man who arrived at the hospital had not suffered any gunshot wounds, she said.
