A Northeast Philadelphia man was shot just feet from his home tonight in a botched carjacking, police said.

The incident occurred about 4:22 p.m., when the victim, 44, was walking from his parked car up the steps to his home on Horrocks Street near St. Vincent in the Castor section of Northeast Philadelphia, Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

As the man walked toward his home, two men in dark clothing, one wearing a mask and armed with a handgun, accosted him, demanding the keys to his car. The victim refused, and a struggle ensued.

The victim was shot twice in the torso, Small said. Medics rushed him to Aria Health's Torresdale campus, where he's listed in critical but stable condition. His attackers fled the scene on foot, heading north on Horrocks toward Cottman Avenue.

Several witnesses on the normally quiet, residential block were taken to Northeast Detectives for questioning, Small said.

Footage from private surveillance cameras in the area is being consulted by police in the ongoing investigation.
