In Philly, police taking 'necessary precautions' after blasts

A spokeswoman for the Philadelphia Police Department said this afternoon that city police are now on alert after the blasts that rocked downtown Boston at the finish line of that city's marathon.

"We're taking the necessary precautions," Officer Tanya Little of the police department's Public Affairs office said. "We'll definitely be out there."

She said the department's Homeland Security unit is on alert, but declined to give specific actions being taken.

Reuters is also reporting that a spokesman for the New York City Police Department said the NYPD has also increased security measures in the aftermath of the explosions in Boston, which occurred shortly before 3 p.m. today.
