Fire damages North Philadelphia bakery

A fire damaged Denise's Delicacies, a popular bakery at 2916 N. 22nd St., in the Swampoodle section of North Philadelphia.

A fire ripped through a popular North Philadelphia bakery early Sunday, causing the building to suffer significant damage.

The fire was reported around 2:40 a.m. at Denise's Delicacies, located at 2916 N. 22nd St. in the Swampoodle section, according to the fire department.

Firefighters brought the flames under control about an hour later. No injuries were reported.

The two-story building suffered structural damage, and officials with the Department of Licenses and Inspections were called to the scene to evaluate, the fire department said.

It wasn't immediately clear what caused the blaze.

Denise's has been in operation since 1990 and specializes in wedding cakes, according to the bakery's website.

Owner Denise Gause told WPVI-TV the news of the fire "hasn't quite hit" her yet.
