Delaware Valley Charter school shooting suspect surrenders

The suspect in a shooting Friday at Delaware Valley High School turned himself in Saturday afternoon at the 35th Police District. The name of the 17-year-old will not be released until he is charged as an adult, according to authorities.

Police around noon Saturday said the District Attorney's Office approved aggravated assault charges against the teen. Prosecutors did not approve charges against another teen, who turned himself into police for questioning Friday night. He has since been released, investigators said.

The announcement came as Philadelphia police released updated information about the incident, which took place shortly before 3:30 p.m. at a gymnasium in the school, located at 5201 Old York Rd. in Logan.

Lt. John Stanford said in an email arriving officers were greeted with "an intense scene" and "provided with an abundance of initial information from school officials and school security staff." Some of that information was revised following further investigation.

Though police yesterday said the victims – one male, one female – were both aged 15, Stanford said an 18-year-old female was shot in the rear of the left arm. The bullet exited the teen's bicep and struck a 17-year-old male in the shoulder. Both students were taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center in stable condition. The female was released yesterday.

Police just after the shooting arrested a 15-year-old student at his home in South Philadelphia. "However, investigators concluded that school security officials had provided inaccurate information to police concerning this young man, and he absolutely did not have any involvement in this incident," Stanford said. That student was released Friday night and "completely cleared by investigators," according to Stanford.

Two more suspects were identified Friday after detectives examined school surveillance video and conducted interviews. Officers executed search warrants on both suspects' homes - one located on the 5600 block of North Sydenham Street in Ogontz and the second on the 7400 block of Rugby Street in East Mount Airy. The first suspect turned himself into the Northwest Detective Division around 7 p.m. Friday night but was released after being questioned. Investigators were in contact with the second suspect's parents until he surrendered Saturday afternoon.

The District Attorney's Office, after reviewing evidence and paperwork submitted by investigators with Northwest Detectives, approved charges of two counts of aggravated assault and related offenses against the second suspect, who is now the only person in custody in connection with the shooting.
