Police said they responded around 8:45 p.m. to Elm and South Harrison streets for a report of a shooting.
There, they found 39-year-old Theodore Jackson lying unconscious in the street. He had been shot multiple times in the torso.
As officers administered CPR, a crowd of about 200 people gathered and began throwing rocks, according to investigators. Police said several officers were struck.
Backup was called to provide security for arriving emergency medical personnel as they attempted to save Jackson's life, investigators said.
Despite their efforts, Jackson died at Christiana Hospital.
Police said Friday there was not yet word on a motive, and a suspect had not been identified in connection with the crime.
