Police were investigating a shooting in Southwest Philadelphia's Elmwood section Wednesday night in which cops say a 50-year-old woman was targeted but a 22-year-old man was wounded instead.
Around 8 p.m., a 13-year-old boy was showing off his BB gun to a group of kids in the neighborhood, said Lt. John Walker of the Southwest Detective Division. The boy left the group with the gun and when he returned, Walker said, it was missing. A fight between the children ensued, and mothers of two of the kids involved came outside to break it up.
A short time later, Walker said, a group of young men between 20 and 25 who cops believe were related to the 13-year-old owner of the BB gun came to the block of Elmwood Street near 74th looking for a fight over the earlier incident. When one of the kid's mothers, a 50-year-old woman, stepped into the fray in an effort to stop the fight, one of the men pulled out a 9mm handgun and fired it at her eight times.
He missed his target, Walker said, and she was not wounded. A 22-year-old man, however, caught a stray bullet in his shoulder. He was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in stable condition.
