City Tavern closed after dumpster fire

A popular restaurant in Old City is closed due to sustained damage from an early-morning dumpster fire.

City Tavern at 2nd and Walnut streets will be closed for both lunch and dinner today, a message on the restaurant's Facebook page says.

The Philadelphia Fire Department said crews were called to a dumpster fire around 3:45 a.m.

Firefighters encountered a "large pile of rubbish" on fire outside the building, the fire department said. The blaze was placed under control just before 4:40 a.m.

City Tavern says it's working to reopen as soon as possible.

"Opening ASAP but no word on when," Chef Walter Staib wrote on Twitter.

No injuries were reported in the blaze.
