An off-duty Camden police officer shot a 21-year-old autistic man and his caretaker Friday afternoon during what the officer believed to be a break-in at his home on Arthur Avenue, the county prosecutor’s office said in a statement.
Both men shot had just been dropped off by a shuttle bus at about 3:45 p.m. in front of the 21-year-old’s home across the street from where the shooting occurred, the Camden County Prosecutor’s office said.
For an unknown reason, the autistic young man crossed the street and began banging on the front door of the off-duty officer’s home. The caretaker tried to stop him, authorities said, but was unsuccessful.
When the front door opened slightly, the officer fired through the opening, striking both men outside. The caretaker was more seriously injured and is currently at Cooper Medical Center in Camden. The autistic man was shot once in the arm.
The prosecutor’s office said no more details are immediately available and the investigation remains open.
