Interboro teen’s death probed

Authorities in Delaware County are investigating the death of an 18-year-old male student from Interboro High School who was found hanged Wednesday night in an old mill in Chester city.

Capt. Stephen Fox said Chester police are looking at the case "like it is a suicide." He said the official cause of death would be determined later by the county medical examiner's office.

Around 7:30 p. m. Wednesday, police received a call reporting an attempted suicide in the 2500 block of Ridley Avenue. The site is a defunct mill. Part of the space is rented out, according to Fox.

Police found the student in an area used as a practice space for a band. Fox said it appeared that he had hanged himself. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Fox said police were not releasing the student's name but had notified Interboro School officials of the death so they would have time to bring in counselors early today. The school is in the borough of Prospect Park, about three miles northeast of Chester.

An Interboro School District representative said school officials would have no comment.

The community has been rocked by the recent deaths of three Interboro High students. On Jan. 19, William J. Bradley, 17, a junior, was accidentally killed as he rode his bicycle on South Avenue in Glenolden. And on Feb. 25, sophomores Vanessa Dorwart, 15, and Gina Gentile, 16, took their lives in a suicide pact at the Norwood train station, a few blocks from the school.
