Quick arrest made after Chesco robbery

A 20-year-old West Chester resident who robbed a West Chester gas station at gunpoint this morning is in custody because of fast action by two officers on patrol, police said.

After receiving a report of an armed robbery at the Lukoil station in the 400 block of Hannum Avenue at 2:23 a.m., West Chester Officers John DiBattista and Jason Malicki saw a man matching the description given on the radio and pursued him, eventually apprehending Ira George Oakes, the criminal complaint said.

Oakes, who was identified by the store clerk, had a white plastic bag with the items reportedly stolen: $335.50, two cartons of cigarettes, two cigars, and two packages of noodles, the complaint said, adding that the gun was located nearby.

Oakes was charged with possession of an instrument of crime, robbery, and related offenses.
