The treasurer of the Whitpain Township Board of Supervisors has been charged with stealing nearly $1.5 million in his day job as an accountant.
William McKernan III of Blue Bell allegedly embezzled the money from a client, contractor K.W. Reese Inc., starting in 2005, and used it to cover credit card bills and other personal expenses. McKernan admitted the thefts to K.W. Reese officials, the Montgomery County District Attorney's office said in a statement.
He is to be arraigned on charges of theft, fraud and dealing in proceeds of unlawful activities at 11 a.m. before Magisterial District Judge John S. Murray III in Blue Bell.
The District Attorney's office is investigating whether McKernan also stole from the township. Whitpain Supervisors Chairman Joseph J. Palmer has not yet returned a phone call.
