Delco woman buys 1 ticket, hits for $16.7 million

With recent attention riveted on Powerball and Mega Millions, another multistate jackpot got largely overlooked.

Hot Lotto, a game played in 13 states and Washington, D.C., took six months to build to $16.69 million on Aug. 22, when a single ticket sold in Delaware matched all the numbers, including the Hot Ball.

The winner, though, was from Delaware County.

Two days after the drawing, Robert Crowther, 66, of Aston, explained that his wife bought just one ticket at a gas station convenience store in Claymont.

At first, she thought they'd won $16,000.

He double-checked the numbers, and realized they had matched every one.

Crowther worked for 30 years at Newark's Chrysler plant before he retired in 2001.

"This is a real life changer," said Crowther, who plans to pay off the car loan and his daughter's mortgage. "We're going to buy a house, but I don't think we know what we'll do with the rest of the money just yet."

It was Hot Lotto's second biggest jackpot ever.

Still unclaimed, though, is a $12.2 million jackpot won by a single ticket sold in Kansas last Nov. 29. Tickets expire after one year.

Hot Lotto's other states are Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Vermont and West Virginia.

In a pregame talk last night, Flyers coach John Stevens told his players: Good teams don't lose two in a row.

But that's just what happened as the Flyers dropped a 3-1 decision to the Phoenix Coyotes in front of a sparse crowd at the Jobing.com Arena.
