Off-duty Delco police officer shot and killed

An off-duty Darby Borough police officer died Saturday night after being shot in his home in Darby Township, officials said.

An off-duty Darby Borough police officer died Saturday night after being shot in his home in Darby Township, officials said.

The officer was shot around 4:30 p.m., said Darby Borough Police Chief Robert Smythe.

Richard Womack, Darby Township police commissioner, said the officer was shot once in the chest.

Further details about the shooting were not immediately clear. Around 10:30 p.m., Womack said detectives were still investigating the scene, on the 600 block of Magnolia Avenue.

No one had been arrested at that time, he said, but a gun had been recovered at the house.

Officials declined to identify the officer Saturday night pending family notification.

Womack said the officer was 26 and had worked at the department part time for four years. He was also a volunteer firefighter at Yeadon Fire Company, Womack said.
