Two arrested in Camden in rape and beating of homeless woman

Camden County Police, with an assist from the community, arrested two men in the rape and beating of a 54-year-old homeless Camden woman.

Camden County Police, with an assist from the community, arrested two men in the rape and beating of a 54-year-old homeless Camden woman.

Miguel Nunez, 36, and Quameer Hence, 23, were arrested and charged Thursday with aggravated sexual assault, aggravated assault, and robbery. Nunez was additionally charged with unlawful possession of a weapon for using a brick against the woman.

The victim, identified in some news media reports but not named by authorities, is recovering at Cooper University Hospital, but was able to talk to investigators, police Capt. Greg Carlin said Thursday.

She was beaten so badly Tuesday night that her ears were nearly severed, police said. She suffered head trauma, multiple lacerations, and a collapsed lung but still managed to walk to Virtua Hospital, where she collapsed.

Carlin said the suspects, both from Camden, were familiar with the 1100 block of Thurman Street, where the assault occurred, and the victim. He would not say what preceded the attack but said it was unprovoked.

Hence was released from prison in February, according to Department of Corrections records, having served time on theft-related charges.

Carlin thanked the community for helping to solve the crime. Shortly after fliers were distributed around the area, someone came forward to name the suspects.

"It showed great courage," Carlin said, "to come forward and show, yes, this is Camden, and they're not going to tolerate savage attacks such as this one."

U.S. marshals assisted in the investigation of the assault, as did the Citizens' Crime Commission, which offered $1,000 for information leading to an arrest.
