Detectives were investigating a reported theft Tuesday afternoon of $144,000 in gold from a vehicle in West Philadelphia, police said.

The alleged theft occurred between noon and 12:30 p.m. on 52d Street near Market Street, police said. An unidentified male on a bicycle smashed the driver-side window of the victim's Lexus and took a duffel bag containing the gold from the driver's seat and rode away.

The victim, a 74-year-old man who works for a gold company, was in the area on business, police said. The man has a schedule, so he may have been targeted. - Robert Moran
