A Delaware County driver was fleeing one accident scene when he drove head-on into a second car, killing himself and its driver, Delaware State Police said Sunday.
Stephen Rementer, 53, of Garnet Valley, was speeding in his 1985 Oldsmobile Cutlass around 2:30 p.m. Saturday on Marsh Road past Arden, Del., a mile and a half south of the Pennsylvania border, when he crossed into the northbound lane and crashed head-on into a 2003 Chevrolet Impala driven by John A. Hawrylak, 68, of Wilmington. Both were pronounced dead at Christiana Hospital.
Neither driver was wearing proper seatbelts, police said. A German shepherd in Rementer's car was hurt and taken to a veterinarian. Police closed Marsh Road for three hours.
Minutes before the fatal crash, Rementer had driven away from a collision at Marsh Road and Naamans Road in which he rear-ended a 2006 Malibu driven by a Yeadon woman. Police said Rementer got out of his car to confront the Malibu driver as she called police from her mobile phone, then sped away. The Malibu driver wasn't hurt.
