JUNIATA PARK The bodies of a man and woman who had each been shot in the head were found Thursday night in a burning house in Juniata Park in Philadelphia's first homicides of 2014, officials said.

Fire marshals ruled the fire at 4257 Ormond St. an arson, police said.

Firefighters reported to the address about 11:25 p.m. and quickly put out the blaze, officials said. In a second-floor bedroom, they found the bodies of the man and the woman.

Each had been shot in the head, and medics pronounced them dead at the scene, police said. The woman was 35, police said, but they declined to release her name until her family could be notified. Police said they did not know the man's identity or exact age, but said he was in his 30s.

The scene was immediately turned over to homicide detectives and the Fire Marshal's Office, said Fire Capt. Clifford Gilliam.

There were 247 homicides in the city in 2013, the lowest total since 1967.
