2013 U.S. Open: Chance of showers at Merion today, but downpours unlikely

Golfers and spectators who were drenched Thursday at the U.S. Open at Merion Golf are unlikely to face a repeat of the torrential rains today.

The National Weather Service says there's a 40 percent chance of showers in Ardmore today. But any rain won't be on the scale of the heavy downpours that temporarily suspended play during Round 1.

In total, less than a tenth of an inch of rain is expected to fall today, the weather service says.

Showers are most likely between 7 and 9 a.m., and between 2 and 5 p.m.

Otherwise, forecasters say today should be partly sunny, with a high temperature near 73 degrees.

Downpours suspended play for several hours Thursday morning, and authorities directed spectators to seek shelter. With a severe thunderstorm watch in effect and forecasters warning of potential tornadoes and large hail, there were fears play would be called off for the day.
