BLUE BELL Montgomery County Community College received a $5,000 grant Monday to supplement a program for at-risk high school students.
The Gateway to College program takes students who are at risk of not graduating and enrolls them in courses that count toward both their high school diploma and their lower-level college requirements.
MCCC started the program in September, and it has 21 students each at their Blue Bell and Pottstown campuses. The program is also at 42 other colleges nationwide.
One student, Khary Harris of Norristown, said the program had raised her aspirations. "I used to think there was no way I could go to college," she said. Now, she said, she wants to start a construction business.
Monday's $5,000 grant, from Texas-based Waste Management Inc., will cover "gap expenses, including meals and other items" that aren't covered by the students' school districts or the program's primary fund, said MCCC President Karen A. Stout.
