Man slain in Southwest Phila. mass shooting ID'd

Police have identified a 23-year-old Kingsessing man killed Sunday night in a shooting outside a Southwest Philadelphia corner store that left five others wounded.

Police have identified a 23-year-old Kingsessing man killed Sunday night in a shooting outside a Southwest Philadelphia corner store that left five others wounded.

Devin Hatch, 22, was shot in the arms, legs, abdomen and groin when four to five gunmen unleashed a torrent of bullets around 7 p.m. into a crowd outside Los Papi Deli & Grocery at 54th Street and Florence Avenue, police said.

"We know that about four to five males in hoodies walked up to the corner," Homicide Capt. James Clark said Monday. "There was a large group of individuals there and these four or five males, all armed with guns, just started firing into the crowd."

Hatch, of the 5600 block of Florence, died at the scene.

Five other victims - all males between 18-23 - remained in area hospitals Monday. Four were in stable condition with gunshot wounds to their legs and arms, police said.

A fifth victim, who is 23, remained in critical condition at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania with two gunshot wounds to the chest.

Crime Scene Investigators recovered nearly dozens of shell casings and bullet fragments from the bullet-riddled corner.

Police officials said no witnesses stepped forward Sunday night, and investigators remained at the scene afternoon Monday, searching for possible surveillance video.

Police were still unsure of a motive in the shooting, Clark said, and were not sure whether Hatch, who had three previous drug arrests, was the intended target.

Detectives, he said, were investigating possible links to recent shootings in the neighborhood, including a homicide last month.

The brazen attack on a crowded corner showed a "disregard for human life," Clark said.

"They just started firing, in excess of 30 rounds, in to a crowd," Clark said. It's bad enough that one person was killed. We could have had a lot more that was killed."

Police ask taht anyone with information call the Philadelphia Police Homicide Unit at 215-686-3334.
