Coatesville cop shot in traffic-stop struggle
A Coatesville law-enforcement officer was shot Saturday night during a struggle with a driver involved in a hit-and-run accident who resisted arrest, police said.
The officer, who was not identified, sustained a single gunshot wound to the leg that is not life-threatening, police said.
Michael Vega, 42, of Coatesville, was charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest, driving under the influence and related offenses. He is being held in lieu of $500,000 cash bail.
Police said the shooting occurred about 10:30 p.m. Saturday when police responded to a report of a hit-and-run accident in the Chester County town. Officers stopped the vehicle that had fled the accident and had nearly hit the driver of the other vehicle on South Third Avenue at Kersey Street.
The driver, Vega, resisted arrested, leading to the struggle and the gunshot. Earlier media reports said the weapon belonged to the injured officer.
Police have not confirmed that.
