A labor dispute with the USGA heated up this week as local unions alleged a contractor brought in foreign workers to set up tents and infrastructure for the U.S. Open.

Members of the local carpenters' and stagehands' unions have been picketing in front of the Merion Golf Club, where the tournament will be held June 10-16, and at Haverford College, where luxury spectator tents and a pedestrian bridge are being built.

Edward C. Coryell, business manager of the Carpenters' Metropolitan Regional Council, said his pickets had spoken to some workers who said they were in the United States on six-month guest-worker visas.

The workers allegedly told pickets they were being paid $8 an hour, with no benefits, and were working from sunup to sundown.

"We asked if they're getting overtime. They laughed," Coryell said.

A representative of Classic Tents who would not give his name said: "We made numerous offers to the union, and they've refused every one of them."

James King, director of marketing for Classic Tents' parent company, said the company did "not engage temporary or seasonal workers from other countries."

The USGA said it was still negotiating with the unions "to explore opportunities for its members to complement the work being done at Merion by companies who have long-term agreements with the USGA."

The tournament is expected to bring $100 million to $125 million to area businesses and draw about 170,000 people.

"Given the significant contribution that our national championship delivers to its host community . . . we are disappointed by how the union is mischaracterizing the USGA's preparations," the USGA said in a statement.

About 25 union members gathered in front of the club Friday, with trucks carrying billboards that said, "Do you want to know the TRUTH about the US OPEN?" Several drivers honked and cheered as they passed.

Mike Barnes, president of the stagehands' union, noted that other major sporting events in the area - including the World Series and the NCAA Regional Finals - have required contractors to at least meet local wage standards.

"The USGA is approaching it with this elitist mentality," Barnes said. "It's an affront to every unemployed worker in this area."

Barnes and Coryell said they were still in talks with the USGA, adding that the protests "will escalate if they don't fix it."

I want too see who steps in on this one. Since its outside Philadelphia the Unions may not be able to get away with their type of Picketing they can get away with in Philadelphia.I am sure some Politician will step in and make a deal.

Until these goons are gotten rid of, this city and area will keep losing events such as this one. And you wonder why people call it Loserdelphia.

The unions, for whatever their faults, are working for a living wage for middle-class workers. This golf tournament is by the rich, for the rich, and all of the real money will go to the rich.

And I think it's disgusting--if it's true--that they are hiring foreign workers at low, low pay with no benefits or overtime. That should not happen in the United States in 2013.

If corporations want a market for their goods, they have to have a working class that can afford them. It's that simple. You cannot pay a pittance to everyone and have only a lower class and a wealthy class. The economy will collapse.

the term "living wage" is the biggest crock going right now. the unions do not request a living wage. the non-union workers request a living wage and they all live just fine on it. the unions request 30-40% more to also pay for pensions. pensions that , for many unions, have been completely drained due to corruption and bad money decisions. and here are the ignorant goons making fools of themselves, standing on front of infltatable rats for union chiefs that have p*ssed away their pensions. never see john doc standing out there in the cold with a rat. and you know nothing about economics and the free market. the market sets itself and the company with the best service and best price wins, just like it does in any business. you offer bad service at a much higher price. you are enttitled to nothing just because you're in a union. wake up.

I agree tatt2. I can't believe they take these workers at gunpoint and force them to do a job for a price that they are happy to do it for. It is way better to pay more and end up like GM. All companies should pay workers more for the sake of doing so. This way a loaf of bread will cost 15 dollars.

I still cannot believe we even have unions in the 21st century. If they were only there to make sure that people were trained for the skilled trades and to provide benefits and retirement, that would be great. When they have to protest or resort to thug tactics when they face competition, it demeans the good aspects of a union.

There is a simple reason union labor is not being used, they priced themselves out of the suburbs long ago!!! I know several members of the carpenter's union who feel that Ed Coreyell and his son are losers and do nothing for the carpenters. I say retire you worthless relics and be happy for all of the money you have extorted in the past. You are a disgrace to not only the city but the members you claim to represent.

It seems like the USGA has more minority members than Ed Coryell's Local 8. You have a carpenters' union controlled by an unelected union secretary; you're lucky if there are even close to 20% minority membership.Ask the minority guy in the picture how many jobs he has worked on a regular basis over the last few years. Look at the Inquirer carpenter terrorist pictures from Milk Boy, Gold Tex, the Quaker church in Bucks County and others.....there are NO representative number of minorites in the pictures. Why now? Why do we in Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love, a city where we all try to get along, WHY DO WE TOLERATE WHAT SEEMS LIKE RACISM?
