Dirtbike rider, motorcyclist die in separate West Philly crashes
A man riding a dirtbike was killed in a crash Thursday night in West Philadelphia and a short time later a motorcyclist died in another crash only a few blocks away, police said.
Shortly before 7 p.m., the man, described only as 25 to 30 years old, was traveling west in the 4500 block of Girard Avenue when his dirtbike struck a median, police said.
The man suffered a traumatic head injury and was transported by a medic unit to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was pronounced dead at 7:30 p.m.
Then, shortly after 7 p.m., a 27-year-old man was killed in an motorcycle accident in the city's Parkside section Thursday night, police said.
The man on the motorcycle was riding south on Belmont Avenue when he was struck by a red Dodge Durango going north and making a left turn onto Parkside Avenue, police said.
A medic unit transported the motorcycle rider to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he later died, police said. The accident is under investigation.
