A Delaware man is being held on $123,100 bond after he attempted to rob an Amish couple driving back from Sunday services in their horse and buggy.

The couple was blocked on Sunday about 12:20 p.m. when a car pulled in front of their horse near Hartly in the middle part of the state.

Wielding a .22-caliber handgun, the driver jumped out of the automobile and pointed at the 46-year-old male and 45-year-old woman. The bandit, identified by police as Mark A. Carter, demanded cash from the couple.

The couple had none and Carter got back into his car and fled, Delaware State police said.

As the car sped away, the Amish couple wrote down the car's license plate number. A patroling trooper pulled over the suspect's car and discovered Carter in possession of the handgun, which had been reported stolen earlier from a residence in Smyrna. Also in the car: two guitars stolen from the same apartment, state police said.

Troopers charged Carter with two counts of attempted robbery, burglary, theft and multiple weapons counts.
