2 workers allegedly stole from developmentally disabled

Burlington County authorities say two workers at a center for the disabled stole and redeemed store vouchers for patients in their care.

Burlington County authorities say two workers at a center for the disabled stole and redeemed store vouchers for patients in their care.

Prosecutor Robert D. Bernardi said the two "direct care" workers at the New Lisbon Developmental Center in Woodland Township used the vouchers at a Kohl's department store.

Nuedah E. Wesley, 38, of Willingboro, and Bettie S. Lovett, 61, of Pemberton Township, N.J., were indicted by a grand jury this week on charges of official misconduct, theft by deception, and theft of property, among other accusations.

Authorities say the women made purchases for four New Lisbon patients between December 2011 and January 2012 from the Kohl's Westampton.

The patients paid for the purchases, which generated $220 in "Kohl's Cash" that can be redeemed later for store merchandise.

The vouchers are supposed to be turned back over to the patients. Instead, authorities say, the workers bought items for themselves.

Both women were suspended without pay and will be scheduled for a future hearing in Superior Court in Burlington County.

New Lisbon Development Center is a residential, state-run facility that provides care to 400 individuals with developmental disabilities.

The case was investigated by the New Jersey Department of Human Services Police.
