S. Jersey duo nabbed for fake hoops fundraising

They went door-to-door collecting money in a crudely-crafted container labeled, "Glenn Landing Middle School Basketball."

They went door-to-door collecting money in a crudely-crafted container labeled, "Glenn Landing Middle School Basketball."

But, according to police, they were nothing but frauds.

Police say that Mark Miller, 40, of Passaic, and Tracey Mauz, 39, of Blackwood, were soliciting donations in the Glendora section of Gloucester Township yesterday morning.

A member of the Gloucester Township Neighborhood Watch thought they appeared suspicious and called police.

Police confronted the pair as they were walking on Front Street carrying a cardboard container with the words scrawled in black marker or crayon.

But Miller and Mauz had no connection to the school or any athletic program, according to police. The container held $17.94 given by unsuspecting households.

Both were arrested for theft by deception, soliciting without a permit, and numerous other warrants. They were taken to Camden County Jail in default of $500.00 bail.

Miller had outstanding contempt of court charges in Bergen County. Mauz had an arrest warrant for contempt of court in Mercer County.

Gloucester Township Police are asking any others who believe they might have given money to the couple to contact 856-842-5560.
