Police in Nether Providence Township have been called to investigate the discovery of a headless body in a creek behind a condominium complex, according to police.

A source who spoke on condition of anonymity said the badly decomposed body of a man was recovered by investigators this morning from a bed of rocks at the rear of the Crum Creek Valley Condominiums at 800 Avondale Road, Wallingford, Nether Providence Township.

The head and a noose were recovered by investigators on the other side of the creek, said the source who was not authorized to speak for publication.

"The body of a male was found in the river," the source said. "It was very decomposed, so it's hard to say the race, but it appears to be a black gentleman."

The source said the head was not in good shape, and dental records would be needed to determine the victim's identity. Investigators were combing the creek and bank for physical evidence.

The body was being transported to the Delaware County coroner, the source said.

Early this afternoon, Nether Providence Township Police Chief Thomas Flannery released a statement saying his department, the Delaware County Criminal Investigation Division and the Delaware County Medical Examiners Office had begun a preliminary investigation.

So far, it revealed that the remains located in the creek were that of an unidentified male and that no indications of foul play were found at the scene.

Crum Creek Valley is a condominium complex consisting of two buildings each seven stories with covered parking garages. They are located on Avondale Road, off Chester Road, according to a Reichert Realtor website.
