A young man drowned Wednesday after he jumped into the Delaware River to help a friend, police said.

About 6:15 p.m., the 18-year-old jumped into the river in Pennypack Park, at 7900 State Rd., when an 18-year-old woman fell off a 10-foot embankment into the water, police said.

The 18-year-old man and a 19-year-old cousin rescued her, but then the 18-year-old man went under and did not resurface, police said.

Police marine units and helicopters searched the water until 11 p.m., said Chief Inspector Scott Small.

The search for the victim, whose name was not released, will resume Thursday morning, Small said.
