A South Jersey couple was charged today with stealing charity donation cans from three Haddonfield stores on March 17, Haddonfield Police said.

Surveillance cameras at two of the stores - Jamaican Me Crazy and The Bistro at Haddonfield - captured the pair purloining the cans that collected spare change for Furrever Friends, Woodbury-based animal rescue that works on a shoestring.

Acting on a tip, police arrested Angeline Marie Johnson, 47, and Patrick Novak, 56, as they were walking on North Haddon Avenue in Haddonfield. They face three counts of theft, police said.

One of donation cans was recovered from one of the Pennsville couple's cars. It's unclear how much money the can contained.

When full, the three cans hold about $225.

Johnson was expected to be released on a summons. Police said Novak would be taken to the Camden County Jail on an outstanding warrant. -    Darran Simon.
