New Year to make a mild — for winter — entry

Winter is giving the Philadelphia area a break this New Year's.

Winter is giving the Philadelphia area a break this New Year's.

Temperatures will stay above freezing New Year's Eve and New Year's Day and there is no precipitation in the forecast Friday and only a 30 percent chance of rain Saturday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

The temperature could be about 40 degrees when the first fireworks display begins 6 p.m. Friday on the Delaware River and about 35 for the midnight show ringing in 2011.

And on New Year's Day, the mercury could actually climb into the 50s for the Mummers Parade.

Rain threatened to cancel the 2010 parade and officials waited until the last minute to give it the go ahead after the forecast changed for the better last Jan. 1.
