Smoldering fire forces schools to close for 3d day

Two Philadelphia schools will remain closed for a third day as a Kensington factory, struck by a 5-alarm fire Monday night, continues to smolder, school officials said.

Two Philadelphia schools will remain closed for a third day as a Kensington factory, struck by a 5-alarm fire Monday night, continues to smolder, school officials said.

The fire department recommended that the school district keep Kensington Culinary Arts High School and H.A. Brown Elementary School shuttered for at least another day. Staff and students of the high school will be relocated to the Kensington Urban Education High School at 2051 Cumberland Street. Staff and students from the elementary school will be bused to William H. Hunter Elementary at 2400 N. Front Street.

A school spokesman said the moves were necessary because the factory building, a former dye works, continues to release heavy smoke. Demolition is set to begin Thursday.
