Boy, 4, falls into open sewer

A 4-year-old boy received minor injuries this morning after falling down an open sewer in West Philadelphia, police said.

A 4-year-old boy received minor injuries this morning after falling down an open sewer in West Philadelphia, police said.

The boy was walking with his mother down 43rd Street near Fairmount Ave. about 10 a.m. when he dropped out of sight into an uncovered manhole, police said.

His mother was about to pull him out of the 6-foot deep sewer before a rescue squad arrived.

"He was not very wet when she brought him out," said a police spokesman. "He had no visible signs of serious injury."

The boy, who was not named by police, was taken to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia as a precaution.

Police said the boy was not looking where he was going and the manhole cover was missing and possibly stolen.
