Man killed by police had been on 3-day crime spree

Wednesday wasn't the first time that Naquan Johnson was suspected in a sexual assault.

Johnson, who was fatally shot by authorities while being pursued in connection with a Collingswood sexual assault and shooting, was wanted for a sexual assault a day earlier in Monroe Township, authorities said.

He and four other men went on a three-day crime spree starting over the weekend, breaking into three homes in Monroe and Franklin Townships, Monroe Township police said.

Authorities nabbed the first suspect on Tuesday on robbery charges. Three others were arrested on robbery charges Wednesday, said Monroe Township Detective Lt. James Stellaccio.

As Monroe and Franklin authorities continued looking for Johnson on Wednesday, they learned that he was wanted in Collingswood and worked with authorities there, Stellaccio said.

In Collingswood, Johnson sexually assaulted an 18-year-old woman, then shot a 21-year-old man around 1 a.m., according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office.

Around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, members of the New York/New Jersey U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force tracked Johnson to the Cherrywood Apartments in Gloucester Township.

He was holed up in a relative's home, said Paul Loriquet, a spokesman for the state Attorney General's Office.

In an upstairs bedroom, Johnson pointed a gun at authorities, prompting a state trooper and a Gloucester Township officer assigned to the task force to open fire, he said. Johnson's gun, an old revolver, was loaded, but it didn't fire, Loriquet said.

Johnson died from his injuries.

The 21-year-old victim in the Collingswood shooting, who is from Philadelphia, was in critical condition Thursday at Capital Regional Medical Center in Trenton.

The Attorney General's Shooting Response Team is reviewing Johnson's shooting, which is standard procedure for shootings involving officers.

In February, Johnson was paroled from a state correctional youth facility on weapons charges stemming from a 2007 home invasion in Camden.

In the same year, Johnson was one of three people charged in a fatal Camden shooting after an argument over the sale of a gun, said Jason Laughlin, a spokesman with prosecutor's office. But authorities dismissed charges against Johnson after they couldn't get witnesses to testify against him, Laughlin said. The other two suspects later pleaded guilty.

In Collingswood, here is what authorities said happened:

Johnson was one of five people gathered in the apartment on Collings Avenue, including the 21-year-old Philadelphia man and a male relative, who lived there.

At some point, one of the guests left the apartment.

Johnson made overtures toward the 18-year-old victim, whom Johnson knew. She rebuked him. Then, he Tasered her and sexually assaulted her at gunpoint.

The tenant and the 21-year-old victim were aware that the sexual assault was going on, Laughlin said.

And at some point, Johnson threatened the two men with a gun.

Shortly after the assault, Johnson and the 21-year-old Philadelphia man argued over something "related to the sexual assault," before shooting him in the head, Laughlin said.
