Stun gun bandits rob Bryn Mawr Starbucks

A pair of masked men armed with a stun gun ambushed two Bryn Mawr Starbucks employees early Friday as they prepared to open for the day, police said.

The bandits entered the popular coffee shop at 766 Lancaster Ave., at 5:15 a.m. and forced the baristas to the floor behind the counter, said Lower Merion police Superintendent Michael J. McGrath.

The robbers took approximately $800, he said.

The men used a stun gun to shock the employees, who suffered superficial wounds, McGrath said. They did not need medical treatment, Police Lt. Frank Higgins said.

Stun guns, which are illegal in Pennsylvania, deliver a high-voltage current between two metal posts when the trigger is pulled. Some are small enough to be carried in pants pockets.

Higgins reported late Friday afternoon that no arrests had been made in the case.

The men fled the store southward on Pennsylvania Avenue in Bryn Mawr, dropping "a large quantity of coins" as they went. Police later recovered the coins, McGrath said.

Both robbers wore masks; one wore a green, hooded sweatshirt and the other a black, hooded sweatshirt.

Police were seeking surveillance videotape in an attempt to identify the bandits, McGrath said.
