A police dog wounded in the line of duty was released from a Philadelphia hospital today.

A police dog wounded in the line of duty was released from a Philadelphia hospital today.

Diablo, a New Castle County, Del., police dog, has been hospitalized at the University of Pennsylvania's Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital since he was shot Nov. 11 while subduing a gunman in Wilmington.

"He is a miracle," said Elaine Holmes, the surgeon who inserted a metal plate to support Diablo's shattered left hind leg. "He's beaten all the odds. . ."

Holmes credited the Belgian Malinois' handler and the veterinary team at the hospital for making the dog's recovery possible.

Diablo is still recovering from pneumonia and will require follow up care at the hospital.
