3 boys seriously injured in Upper Darby accident

Three Upper Darby boys were seriously injured today when a car veered across three lanes traffic and plowed into them.

One of the boys, a 12-year-old, was in "extremely critical" condition this afternoon at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

The two other boys, a 12-year-old and a 13-year-old, were also being treated at CHOP for serious but non-life threatening injuries, said Michael Chitwood, Upper Darby police superintendent.

The boys were walking home from the Beverly Hills Middle School where they had been dismissed early for the Thanksgiving holiday, Chitwood said.

Two of the boys were standing at the curb, waiting to cross Marshall Road about 12:10 p.m., when a Dodge Charger driven by a 42-year-old woman swerved to avoid a traffic jam, Chitwood said.

The Dodge crossed three lanes of traffic, struck the two boys, and continued traveling where it hit another boy 15 yards down the road.

One of the boys was tossed into the air and bounced off the car's windshield, shattering it, Chitwood said.

"The speed was significant enough to knock one of them out of his shoes," Chitwood said.

The driver steered the car back into the eastbound lanes where it hit a Subaru station wagon, slamming it into a parked Mercedes. More than 25-yards down the road, the Dodge came to a stop.

Police took the woman, who Chitwood did not identify, into custody and transported her to Upper Darby police headquarters.
