Stray bullet critically wounds woman in bed

A Chester woman remains in critical condition after a stray bullet pierced through a wall and struck her in the head as she lay in bed last night.

Kathy Stewart, 49, a mother of three, is on life support and unlikely to recover, said her eldest daughter, Katisha Stewart. More than two dozen family members and friends held vigil this afternoon outside the home of Stewart's mother, where the shooting took place.

Kathy Stewart, born and raised in Chester, was in the second-floor bedroom of her mother's home at 300 Franklin St. at about 8:30 last night. Stewart has been caring for her mother, who has cancer, family members said.

Stewart was speaking on her cell phone to her fiance and suddenly stopped talking, Katisha Stewart said. Her fiance called the home phone, and Stewart's 15-year-old daughter, Chantel, went upstairs to check on her and found her unconscious. Stewart was transported to Crozer-Chester Medical Center.

Police are reviewing surveillance tape from cameras stationed across the street, and are seeking witnesses.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Detective Robert Whitaker at 610-447-8420 or the tip line at 610-447-7810.
