Black firefighters: Union can’t be trusted

A day after accusing the Philadelphia firefighters union of racial hostility in a federal lawsuit, a group of black firefighters pressed their grievances today, saying the union cannot be trusted to protect their hard-won civil rights.

Kenneth W. Greene, president of Club Valiants, the black firefighters organization that filed the suit, detailed a number of incidents over the past several years that have heightened racial tensions in the department.

"We had to take action to let them know enough is enough," he said.

In a statement today, the firefighters' union, Local 22, said it does not "condone discrimination in any fashion" and fights "for the rights of all fire fighters and paramedics" regardless of race.

Club Valiants charged that union leadership has been taken over by a predominantly white firefighters organization - the Concerned American Fire Fighters Association (CAFFA) - that is dedicated to overturning a 1984 federal consent decree that paved the way to hiring many black firefighters.

The Valiants also noted that none of the 10 officers in Local 22 is black, and the union has just one black employee - a janitor. Union meetings have become so divisive that black members no longer attend, Greene said.

The lawsuit also includes numerous postings from the union's Internet message board that mock blacks and black firefighters.

CAFFA's president, Mike Bresnan, who also is Local 22's recording secretary, said his organization views the consent decree, which mandates at least 12 percent of new hires be African-American, as "antiquated" and "discriminatory."

The Valiants' lawsuit also names CAFFA and the city as defendants.

Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers, a past president of Club Valiants, said today that he expects teamwork from his firefighters, despite any racial tension over the consent decree.

"I would say that the goal would be complete harmony, but that's utopia," he said. "When folks start bickering, it's about educating people that the value of diversity is what different people bring to the table."

Ayers said he had not read the Valiants' lawsuit but would monitor the case and "take the appropriate actions."

Greene said he had tried to start a dialogue at union meetings on the consent decree and other racial divisions, but was told "to either shut up, sit down or get out."

At one union meeting, Greene said, a fire chief told him that "if I was unhappy with Local 22, I needed to go to the sanitation department, where they don't have a consent decree."

The union's statement did not address any of the specific allegations in the lawsuit, but said Local 22 acts "without prejudice for the good of the whole" and expects to be vindicated in court.

"We will continue on this path without bias because it is right and because lives depend on it, ours and the publics'," the statement said.

So I guess they'll stop crying when the union leadership is all black? Just stop the crying already. You people get everything you want handed to you because you play the race card. Maybe some of you aren't qualified, don't work hard enough, lack people skills, etc. Stop using race as an excuse for everything. I'm sure these people would cry racism if they were hit by a white colored car.

It must be nice to be black. If your black, you have an excuse for every ill in your life. Any promotion you dont get, every demotion you recieve, any trouble w/ the police, it's not because you didn't work as hard, weren't smart enough or made mistakes, it's just because your black. There has to be a certain percentage of minority's in any job or it's racism. I would love to hear from an employer one day that while there were more qualified canidates for this position we want to hire you because your white and we need a certain number of whites on our staff to meet our quota, so your hired. I'm so sick and tired of the race card being played at every turn.

Breaking news..unions can't be trusted? How about the fellow black female lieutenant who stole the cable box from a firestation so she could watch cable at home? Fellow UNION members paid out of their pockets for that cable service and the black chic pulled one out from under them. Even during an investigation, she kept her mouth shut until Comcast nailed the problem...her inactive/past due/unpaid/shut -off cable box was switched to the firehouse and she stole the paid firehouse one for her home. It won't make the news, nor will she be fired for theft of public property because she is the correct skin color in this city. Talk about a compromise of trust. Most blacks are hypocrites and their actions prove it.

First it was Dome Lights, although we never heard a peep about the white officer who was discriminated against for wearing cornrows. Now it is the fire fighters union. I guess these folks are setting a high standard for all the other unions in the city to demand more set asides and special treatment. But I ask this, if people are going to state that all jobs should be indicative of the population counts and percentages, I'm OK with that, with one caveat - subtract out all the people who have been convicted of a misdemeanor or higher, subtract out all the people who can not prove citizenship, subtract out all the people who have not filed a tax return in at least five years, and subtract out all the people who work for ACORN. Then publish the real results - drastically different. People use statistics like sex toys, they are self serving to the user. Do the job and your colleagues will respect you.

you said it miked0844, I wonder if people know: that a white firefighter cannot join the Valiants because you need two sponsors! All of the Valiant members know they are not allowed to sponsor a white firefighter. The Black firefighters are allowed to have a black firfighters association. What I want to know is where is the White firefighters association? And what happened to Freedom of Speech? Now everything said and done has to be "politically correct" and that means "Black correct" Why can't we just speak the truth and say anything about a firefighter who happens to be black (even if it is true)

well if they're so unhappy with their union, perhaps they should separate from it and make their own. Then the city can bargain for wages and benefits with the white firefighters and the black firefighters separately and we'll see who the black leadership in the city gives the better deal to... now THAT would be a fun lawsuit to watch!

you are the most ignorant people i have ever had the pleasure of reading. None of you have a clue. I hope you get what's coming to you. How does it feel to have a black man represent you?

Where does all this nonsense end? In a previous story, it was cited that blacks were under represented in the fire department, since blacks make up 45% of the city population but "only" 27% of the fire dept. If we carry that to its logical conclusion, based on their demands, they would get 45% in not just that job, but ALL jobs...how about the Sixers or the Eagles only being allowed to be 45% black!? Its kind of ironic that an exclusively black organization (the Valiants) is claiming that the fire union isn't inclusive enough to suit them. I always think back to the words of MLK, about "judging people by the content of their character, not the color of their skin." Far too many people have become accustomed to hearing that message only when it is in their favor, and to disregard it when they want something undeserved, simply because they are black or some other minority. America is supposed to be a meritocracy, meaning people get what they earn. If my house is on fire I don't care if the people coming to rescue me are white, black, green or purple, just that they are qualified to properly do the judge. Any firemen worth his salt should feel likewise. And if more did, surprise surprise, you'd actually see a decrease in the levels of racial tension, when people actually ARE equal.

"The Valiants also noted that none of the 10 officers in Local 22 is black, and the union has just one black employee - a janitor." Oh, my G*d - I want to throw up. This is a throwback to the Jim Crow era. Clearly, this is not how Martin Luther King would have wanted it if he were alive today. While the ideal we strive for is a colorblind society, we will never achieve that with de facto "whites only" unions with their token, Black janitor members.

I would like to know why can black firefighters have their own club? I believe this is illegal. What if the shoe were on the other foot. The white fire fighter had a whites only club. The same goes for latino's and asians. This black only club is operating illegally. Federally its against federal law. How do the black fire fighters get away with this? This is a racial biasis. The club should be disbanded.

I'm white - where are all the black fireman?

Big cushy
Does this mean the streets department and water department will now have to make their departments 55% white? That would have to be the logical next step if according to the valiant guy that all departments have to be in accordance with the population.
