Open on Veterans Day? This bank was, briefly

We have all done it - forgot to turn off the lights or pay a bill, or left our lunch on the kitchen counter.

Sometime overnight, someone at a bank in Upper Darby forgot to lock the door, giving new meaning to "open 24 hours."

Oops.

No worries. Nothing was missing, police say.

Around 9:10 this morning, police received a call for a possible robbery at the M&T Bank at 824 Lansdowne Ave. When they arrived, they found a customer waiting outside.

The man, who was trying to make a cash drop for his business, entered through the unlocked rear door. Seeing no one inside and the lights off, he called police. About the same time, the alarms went off.

"It sounds like the cleaning company just forgot to re-secure the doors," Sgt. Scott Lewis said. He said police did check and found damp, newly cleaned carpets inside.

There was no way to check with the bank today for comment. It was closed - well, almost closed - for Veterans Day.

But, M&T Bank does have security on its mind.

According to its Web site, the 150-year-old bank touts "a long-standing tradition of careful, conservative and consistent management."

There's even a little padlock icon on the bank's site next to the question "Do you know how to keep your information secure?"

Instead of laundering money, the cleaning crew laundered the carpets. Glad to know cleanliness is next to um....cleanliness at M&T. Glad the customer didn't go in to find bodies on the floor. But I wonder, if the door wasn't secured, was the alarm system truly engaged?

This is a sad thing to happen and unfotunantly its not all that uncommon. Having worked at a bank before, I know first hand that the cleaning crews are not that detailed oriented. We actually fired one set of cleaning crew because they did not lock the door nor set the alarm before they left in the evening. TexasChick: The answer to your question of "if the door wasn't secured, was the alarm system truly engaged?" The answer is yes It can be fully engaged. As long as no one opens the door, the circuit is complete. Most banks however use a motion detection system so the doors could all be unlocked but as long as no one sets foot inside, the alarm stays engaged and untripped.

even if a door or vault is unlocked, if the alarm is activated it will go off if the door is opened.
