The large field of Democrats seeking to be elected Pennsylvania governor continues to take shape.
Tomorrow, it will be Scranton Mayor Chris Doherty's turn to formally declare himself a candidate.
Just last Tuesday, Doherty, 51, was elected to a third term as mayor of Scranton, the hometown of two governors in the past half-century: Democrat Robert P. Casey Sr. (1987-1995) and Republican Bill Scranton (1963-1967).
At the recent fall dinner for Chester County Democrats, Doherty said that Scranton residents were well aware of his gubernatorial ambitions even as he was running for reelection to city hall.
He said the main reason he hadn't formally declared his intentions was that he didn't want to be a candidate for two offices at the same time. "I didn't want to run against myself" was how he put it.
Four other well-known Democrats already have entered the race: Philadelphia businessman Tom Knox, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato, Montgomery County Commissioner Joe Hoeffel, and State Auditor General Jack Wagner, of Pittsburgh.
