Rendell blames union for talks failure

A tentative agreement to end the transit strike by SEPTA workers collapsed, Gov. Rendell said early Saturday evening. Rendell blamed union leadership for the breakdown and demanded that union members be allowed to vote directly on the proposed contact, or he vowed to take back nearly $7 million in state funds offered as a contract incentive.

There was no immediate response from from Transit Workers Local 234.

In a press conference this evening, Rendell, flanked by Mayor Nutter, SEPTA'S chairman Pat Deon and other SEPTA officials, said he will no longer act as an intermediary in the negotiations.

"I'm out, Rendell said emphatically. "I have a state to run."

Rendell called the failure to reach an agreement "nuts," and said that "he had never seen anything like it in 32 years of government."

Rendell said the unon had made new demands Saturday after a handshake agreement yesterday with U.S. Rep. Bob Brady (D, Pa.). The new demands included an independent audit of the SEPTA pension plan and a clause revisiting the health-care provision if Congress approves a better national health care plan.

What is that gradual (I assume you mean) increase to the pension fund? The specifics are pretty important, and since the public is paying for them, we should know.

The employees should be paying more to the pension fund, but is it really a significant amount? I still oppose Septa agreeing to raises after this union cost the city so much. This is rewarding the TWU for striking. It creates a beast. Do you give a teen who throws a tantrum the car keys?

And after 5 years, these greedy you-know-whats are going to want more raises . . . while I'm very happy this looks like it will end so people don't have to be inconvenienced anymore, I hate that the city actually gives these scums what they want.

Septa has the right to maintain that it is an at-will employer now, since there is no contract. It can simply cease negotiations, and refuse binding arbitration, and this is the best deal for the taxpayer and rider. We can't afford lavish benefits for bus drivers and change makers. These are jobs that start at $9.00 an hour in most places, and go to about $13-14 an hour. Truck drivers of commercial cargo are likely more skilled, esp. hazmat drivers, and they don't make money like this. It's a crime to bilk the taxpayer and rider to fund an average Septa salary of $52,000 a year or $26 an hour, plus insane benefits. This has to end, not go on. Renewing a contract would be suicide for Septa's financial survival. The state money is drying up and going away.

Public Service workers should not be allowed to strike, period. The law has to be changed. I've just moved here and find this all absurd. In the dead of winter am I going to come home to freezing home because the gas workers are whining about their pensions? Not to mention -- EVERYONE is taking cut backs these days. I have no sympathy for people making $52k a year to stand in a box and pick their butts complaining about their compensation. The individual workers should be shamed into standing up to their union leaders and making it clear that this is not okay. In general, I support Unions, but this is a shameful abuse of the process. THEY ARE PUBLIC SERVICE EMPLOYEES, not downtrodden coal miners or something.

$1,250 just for ratification is ridiculous. Unemployment is over 10% nationally and these jerks strike. Unions were good back in the day but now they're like overgrown kids who throw tantrums when they don't get what they want.

I for one do not think that Septa initially brought enough bargaining chips to the table. All it would have taken, in addition, to their initial offer are a few dozen Krispy Kremes and Willie Brown would have acquiesced faster than it would have taken him to polish off said donuts. In all seriousness though, can anyone please tell me how different this deal is than the initial offer made?

I prefer the methods of the Great American President Ronald Reagan who had to deal with the renegade Flight Controllers Union. His tactics were masterful! He fired them all & rehired new employees at lower wages. This would be great for Philly... think about it. The poor wouldn't be saddled with a fare increase & the rest of us wouldn't have to pony up additional taxes to subsidize what the fare hike doesn't cover. Philadelphia has been ruined by unions like this one.

unions have outlived their usefulness. They killed the coal, steel, now auto industries. The avg. union member doesn't benefit much more if they were out of the union. Its all a scam by union administrators to generate income for themselves... What do they actually do to improve service... nothin

Boo Hoo, I am so like, betrayed by these union guys, like they are totally so Black, how can they be so racists against themselves to act like Teamster thugs and INCONVENIENCE me and cause me to pay more money. It's like so totally fascists that they should be fined and locked up and like, their leaders silenced. I mean, poor people take the bus, what about them? Don't the workers know that having an organization like a union puts them in the same class of people who have property rights extended through corporate America with the Uniform Commercial Code. I mean, how can unions get recognition from the government like they were some kind of irrevocable trust holding trillions of dollars of wealth and corporate control. I mean, like who cares about the property rights of workers pension, they should be locked up and their money confiscated and given to hedge fund managers to create wealth and like not distribute to them in retirement. I mean, like I'm an idiot, working for nothing, why can't they? Don't they want to face old age with nothing more to look forward to other suicide. Throw them out of work, punish them so they feel as bad as I do about being a compliant drooling fool for my boss at work until they decide to do with me what they will, because they have rights and I don't and who do these unions think they are acting like they have more power over their lives than I will ever have. Whatever, fire them, does any one know who's dating Mischa Barton.

There He Is
Now that these spoiled, lazy bums got what they wanted, will the public now enjoy the benefits of friendly, courteous, helpful employees and subway stations that don't smell like urine? I highly doubt it. Maybe I'll start throwing my trash on the floor to make these thugs earn their ridiculously inflated salaries and benefits.

I'm an extremely busy person. The past expirence with some drivers are not pleasant. They weren't stop at the stop to pick up passangers, insterad drive off. Especially few times during very harsh weathers. Seems these driver having fun to see passangers suffering. Some of the drivers are so rude. I am wondering that under the ecnomic crisis like right now, 10% unemployment rate, is there any reason to keep these jerks aroud to make our life more miserable? They DO NOT DESERVE THE OFFER!!! I totally agree with JerryD on our Great American President Ronald Readan's act: GET RID THEM ALL and let poeple WHO APPRECIATE ALL THESE HAVE THE JOB!!!!!!!!!! Wake up governors and mayors, WE DO NOT NEED TWU fools around, we need a NEW TEAM! Which the new team will be given reasoble benifit under current situation and take their job seriously.
