8-year-old twins injured in Crescentville hit-run

Eight-year-old twin girls were injured - one critically - by a hit-and-run driver in the city's Crescentville section this afternoon, police said.

The incident occurred about 3:40 p.m. at Colgate Street at Cheltenham Avenue, police said.

Eryca and Kaitlyn Bradfield were crossing Colgate when a gray Lincoln Town Car struck both.

One of the girls was run over and had tire tracks on her clothing over her midsection, police said. The other girl was knocked down and less-seriously injured.

Police said several witnesses ran after the Lincoln, which was going south on Colgate, and were able to get a license plate number.

Investigators tracked the license plate to a car in Northeast Philadelphia matching the witnesses' descriptions and have questioned the owner, police said. No arrest was immediately reported.

Both girls were taken to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children. Police said the girl who was run over was initally listed in cirtical condition and was in surgery, but that her injuries were not life-threatening.

A hospital spokeswoman said that Kaitlyn was admitted in serious condition, but had no information about Eryca.

The girls live on Cheltenham Avenue near the accident scene and apparently were crossing the street to go to a corner store, police said.

Note to mom: I'm sorry for this tragic accident and wish your children nothing but the best, but 8 years old in that neighborhood and 8 years old alone = not smart.

Why aren't parents prosecuted for endangerment of their own children for incidents like this? Eight years old?

okay, why were your kids out during the day, together, within a couple blocks of home? sure I understand that. but why were their identities released to the newspaper? As a parent you have my utmost sympathies for everything you are going through, but putting your children's names front and center couldn't possibly help that. Maybe i'm wrong?

I am sorry to hear about the kids getting hurt the way that they did. I hope that the police get him and punish him for what he has done! Please don't let children out alone but, always supervised.

It's speculation whether the Washington Wizards played inspired tonight, but it was obvious that the 76ers did not play inspired defense in the third quarter. On the night that longtime Wizards owner Pollin died of a rare brain disorder, his team played better than it has played for much of this season in a 108-107 win over the 76ers.
