Crash ends a police pursuit in Southwest Phila.

A police chase before noon in Southwest Philadelphia ended with a violent crash and the arrest of at least one man, police said.

The nine-block pursuit up Woodland Avenue began about 11:30 a.m. at 61st Street. The car collided with six other vehicles before coming to a grinding halt at 52nd Street and Woodland Avenue, police said.

Several people received minor injuries and were treated at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Mercy Philadelphia Hospital.

A police spokeswoman did not know who had been hurt or what started the chase.

A car being pursued by the cops hit six other cars and injures a number of people before stopping? Who's paying for all that? High speed pursuits in SW Philly are turning into a weekly event!

Someone innocent could have gotten severly hurt or killed and we are suppose to feel sorry for these boys who were sentenced for the other killings. They need to learn their lessons it started here and will go further if someone doesn't do anything about it. I guarantee you the one who was arrested is a minor who should have been in school, mind you he is not a bad kid yeah right!!!!!!!

I wonder if the crime committed was worth smashing up the neighborhood, injuring innocent people and making us neighbors fear being slaughtered on the street by criminals & cops incapable of determining risk. Please, if my car is ever stolen do not put the children walking down the street at risk by chasing the thief at 100 mph. Are you protecting property or people? I live at 46th and Woodland, there were cars pieces spread over a several block area. No trolleys for hours due to the road block. All for what?

southwest philly again. Parents alway say they are good boys. I disagree. Was car stolen? They should be locked and the parents be responible for their actions.

Note to self (and all criminals, gang members, wannabes, et al.): hang out at 46th & Woodland & commit crimes-it seems that it's perfectly OK w/Phillypapers. Now's our chance-let's just commit every crime we can right there!

I was on the 36 trolley, on my way home from school, and these losers almost hit this young father with his young daughter who was in the street anticipating the trolley. I don't understand why people run in Southwest, there isn't a chance in the world you are going to get away!! I'm glad they got caught, you should have seen the speed these guys were going down a busy Woodland Ave. Just some more criminals off the street!

Can't say I'm all that surprised. I'm sure it's not the first time they've been in handcuffs. Yes we can!!

Several people rec'd minor injuries. Were they in the vehicle or civilians? I can see it now, people hear the crash, see the Police involved, fall to the ground and feigh injuries all for that pay-off. Just like when you see a SEPTA vehicle accident. The injured are carried off the vehicle on strechers wearing neck braces.

A boy also got hit by a car this morning on Elmwood Ave, I witnessed both, the boy getting hit, and these criminals running from the cops. It's a disgrace.

Uh, the crash is not the result of the police giving pursuit, but the result of a criminal acting reckless. Police arrested the guy, so that is the whole point. The injured have to sue the person who caused it, the reckless driver. Philly courts need to be easier for people to use. You can't blame police for this.

And there's a bike lane there. Wow, no thank you. They need a crack head lane for that area of town.

cleanupphilly... I completely agree, if the criminals know the police wont chase them for civilian safety issues, EVERY criminal in SW would run, instead of the 50% who do now!!

High speed chases through neighborhoods do not help anyone. The crash happened 1/2 block from a school playground while children were outside. Bystanders were injured and it could have been alot worse. There has to be a better way. Does anyone remember that mother and 3 babies that were killed on their front stairs as a result of a high speed police persuit? Yes catching criminals is good, but I don't think it is always worth the risk of many, many bystanders lives on such a busy street.
