A fire ripped through a South Philadelphia rowhome without smoke detectors this morning, killing two elderly siblings, officials said.
Standing outside the burned-out row house at 2417 S. Warnock Street this morning, Jim Hart identified the victims as his mother, Madeline, 68, and uncle Robert Ermilo, 73.
Neighbors told reporters the siblings had lived on the street for decades.
Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers said at the scene that firefighters rescued an elderly man from the second floor of the building but efforts to save him were unsuccessful.
The body of a woman was found on the first floor, he said.
Firefighters could not find any smoke detectors during a search of the home, Ayers said.
Fire marshals are investigating the cause of the fire, which was reported about 12:30 a.m. and raged for about 20 minutes before being controlled.
Staff photographer Clem Murray contributed to this story.
