At an early-morning rally outside the gates of the Philadelphia Museum of Art's Perelman Building, a group of museum members, security guards and union organizers rallied to welcome Timothy Rub, new museum head, who takes up the reins today.

Guards, employed by AlliedBarton of Conshohocken, a museum subcontractor, are seeking to join the Philadelphia Security Officers Union, an independent local shop. The National Labor Relations Board has set an election for Oct. 9 and 10.

Security officers at the museum are all paid $10.03 an hour.

Following the morning rally, organizers sought to donate $265 in loose change - gathered from museum patrons last summer to publicize the guards' loss of a promised 25 cent raise - to the museum in honor of Rub's arrival.

Museum guards inside the building refused to let the organizers enter the building, however. A supervisor from AlliedBarton finally accepted the heavy bucket of coins and promised to deliver it to Rub for deposit in the museum's coffers.
