CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE, N.J. - Closing arguments in the trial of New Jersey State Trooper Robert Higbee were presented this morning and the jury is expected to begin deliberations this afternoon.

Higbee , 37, of Somers Point, is charged with a double count of vehicular homicide in the September 27, 2006 deaths of Upper Township sisters Jacqueline Becker, 17, and Christina Becker, 19. Higbee allegedly blew through a stop sign at the intersection of Stagecoach and Tuckahoe Roads in the Marmora section of Upper Township at 65 mph and struck the minivan the girls were in. Higbee was chasing a speeder.

The case has garnered national attention because of its implications involving police pursuits and that much of the evidence being used against Higbee was obtained from the black box recorder contained in his police cruiser.

Higbee, who has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the trial, could face up to 20 years if he is convicted.
