S. Jersey man wins $1 million in A.C.

Thomas Hedenberg of Mantua exults over his $1 million win.

The Wheel of Fortune certainly spun the way of a Mantua, Gloucester County, man over the weekend.

Thomas Hedenberg, 63, won $1 million in a slot tournament that pooled competitors from the Atlantic City Hilton and Resorts Atlantic City.

"We chose to come to Hilton this weekend to celebrate my wife Cindy's birthday," he said. "$1 million ... wow ... what a way to celebrate!"

Played on Wheel of Fortune slot machines, the event was called - what else? - the Wheel of Fortune $1,000,000 Winner-Takes-All Slot Tournament.

The contest began Oct. 9, with Destination Club members taking part in daily qualifying tournaments at both locations. The 250 top scores from each made it to Saturday afternoon's semifinals. Then the top 10 from each were taken by limo to an 11 p.m. showdown in the Resorts Ballroom.

Hedenberg emerged able to buy lots of vowels.

A year ago, Gary Kulawiak of Ellicott City, Md., won the first playing of the tournament.
