Wrestlers in 'lynching' photo scratched from tournament

The Phillipsburg High School wrestlers seen posing with a lynched dummy wearing a Paulsboro shirt were pulled without replacements from a district-level tournament this week.

NJ.com reports that the seven team members were scratched last night from participating in Saturday's District 1 tournament as a result.

The decision was made at a school district meeting on the photo, in which the dummy is seen with a noose around his neck.

Phillipsburg principal Gregory A. Troxellnight’s meeting, would not say why the seven wrestlers were scratched. The wrestlers shown in the photo were not identified.

“It’s a private student matter,” Phillipsburg principal Gregory A. Troxell said after the meeting, declining to say why the boy's were scratched. “(And) no other Phillipsburg High official can comment on it.”

So the season is now over for the wrestlers, who ranged from a third-ranked 145-pounder in the state to prior district champions, as well as veteran varsity members.
